This significant annual event represents a key national platform for women in police, defence and emergency services organisations to enhance their leadership knowledge and capacity. Drawing together the sectors’ most respected thought leaders, the Summit aims to celebrate the role of women as well as equip participants with the skills, confidence and connections to consolidate their skills and plan for future career success.

The National Police, Defence and Emergency Services Leadership Summit is a major annual event for women at all levels to connect, share ideas and build their leadership skills. Created by Australia’s leading authority on women’s leadership, Women & Leadership Australia, the Summit has been developed in consultation with a broad range of stakeholders across these sectors.

The purpose of the Summit is to contribute to the development of resolute and effective women leaders through skills development, expert advice and strategic industry based networking. The 2018 Summit will provide a unique opportunity to learn from a wide variety of personnel from on the ground front-line managers to inspirational senior decision makers.

During the Summit, participants will hear from a number of inspirational speakers about their leadership/career journeys and the key elements that have contributed to their success. Armed with this valuable insight, participants will identify their own unique gifts and talents and begin to create their personal brand and message.

Tracey Spicer AM is an author, journalist and television presenter who has anchored programs for ABC TV, Network Ten, Channel 9 and Sky News over the past 30 years. Renowned for the courage of her convictions, passion for social justice, and commitment to equality, she also has a wicked sense of humour. Currently, she works as a weekly columnist for Fairfax, presentation trainer for Outspoken Women and the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, and media trainer at Spicer Communications. She appears regularly as a commentator on ABC TV and Channel 9. Tracey has written, produced and presented documentaries for NGOs in Bangladesh, Kenya, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, and India, and the National Breast Cancer Foundation in Australia. Her essays have appeared in dozens of books, including Women of Letters, She’s Having a Laugh, and Bewitched & Bedevilled: Women Write the Gillard Years, while her TEDx Talk, The Lady Stripped Bare, has attracted more than 1.5 million views.

Understanding the authentic you and how this impacts your leadership style is a critical skill for every leader. Once we understand our own personal ‘how’ and ‘why’, it is time to start experimenting to ensure we do not fall into the same old competency traps. It is time to be bold, be brave, be you! 

Australia is progressing in terms of female representation in workplace and community leadership roles, yet high-potential women advance more slowly than their male peers in many frontline sectors. What else can be done to highlight and change the current situation and move closer to parity and equity?

Many industries are experiencing more innovation and change than ever before. This places enormous pressure and demands on leaders, requiring them to develop the skills to lead in ways they have not had to think about previously. As leaders it is imperative that we develop the capacity to thrive in this new world and learn to leverage new technologies, new mental models and new ways of working.

We are all challenged by the need to juggle multiple tasks and responsibilities and to constantly do more with less. Staying focused on the bigger picture and knowing how to prioritise appropriately enables us to get the best return on our effort and energy.
